How does the sow's hemoglobin concentration (Hb) change during pregnancy and after delivery? Is hemoglobin concentration related to parity?
I believe everyone is as curious as the editor, so I will take you to find out today.
Normand et al. (2012) conducted a study on this. In the experiment, 308 healthy sows were selected (excluded sows with abscesses, limb diseases, etc.). Hb was measured in the first 4 weeks, during farrowing (2 to 5 days after farrowing, 4.7 days on average) and 3 weeks after farrowing, and the backfat thickness of sows was measured. The results showed that the average Hb of sows 7 weeks before delivery at 1 gestational age was the highest, which was 118g/L, and the corresponding backfat thickness was 16mm.
Ø From 7 weeks before delivery to 3 weeks after delivery, the Hb of sows has been decreasing
Compared with Hb 7 weeks before delivery, Hb decreased by 2.7g/L in 4 weeks before delivery, 8.1g/L at delivery, and 9.1g/L at 3 weeks after delivery.
Ø With the increase of gestational age, sow Hb gradually decreases (P<0.0001)
Compared with sows of 1 gestational age, Hb of sows of gestational ages 2 and 3 decreased by 3.4 g/L, sows of 4 and 5 gestational ages decreased by 6.7 g/L, and Hb of sows of gestational age 6 and above decreased. 8g/L.

Ø Sows with smaller backfat have lower Hb
A change in backfat thickness of 1mm corresponds to a change in Hb of 0.9g/L.
1. The last 1/3 of the fetus in the body of the sow is longer than 2/3 of the weight of the entire fetal period. At this time, the fetus needs more blood to supply nutrients, which leads to the decline of the sow Hb, massive blood loss after delivery, and lactation. The constant weight loss also causes the sow's Hb to continue to decline until weaning;
2. Due to high yield and high load, with the increase of gestational age, the Hb of sows is also continuously decreasing;
3. Most of the wasting sows are anemic.
From the results of this research and actual production practice, it is necessary to pay attention to blood supplementation to sows in order to maintain high production performance and a longer production life.
